Maps-Contours of a Story
About the Show
Artist maps are imaginative representations of a location, moment in time, or idea, that engage us on an emotional and intellectual level. They can be mystical, directional, and obscure. With Maps—Contours of a Story, explore hidden meanings and visual stories from a selection of artists, juried and curated by Saskia Jorda, an interdisciplinary artist working on drawings, fiber-based sculpture, and site-specific installations. Jorda is a Phoenix-based fiber artist and teacher, who recently exhibited in the Women to Watch exhibition series New Worlds at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
To accommodate the format of the work in the gallery, some of the plants and animals were created again in different variations that fit better with the compositions. Some were also left out, while other creatures were added. These additions, plus other creative choices made the work fun and personal to me as well as unique to the original artwork. The final collection of work on display in the gallery will be used to create the workbook cover. Click the button below to learn more about Gardening the USA.
